"The Construction of Wine – A Conspiracy of Knowledge and Art"

We hereby announce that the XXXIV Vine and Wine World Congress and the General Assembly of the OIV – International Vine and Wine Organization will be held in Porto, Portugal in June 2011. The OIV is an intergovernmental scientific and technical organization with recognized expertise in the field of vines, wines and other viniculture products. It is made up of over 50 member States and Observers and succeeds the "Office International de la Vigne et du Vin", which was regulated by the Treaty that Portugal subscribed in 1924.

At a time when the OIV is increasingly recognized as a reference amongst the international vitiviniculture world, coinciding with Portugal's having launched the "Wines of Portugal" brand to stimulate international recognition of our wines, it is of great importance in terms of image and prestige that the World Congress be held in Portugal.

This international event will attract world specialists to the city of Porto, which lends its name to one of the most famous fortified wines. It also positions the city as a meeting point for wine-related knowledge and gourmet flavours ever-present in its business, the cities, constructions and its markets. In collaboration with the University of Porto and some of the most representative institutions of the city of Porto, we will demonstrate that in the wake of the event a Platform of Knowledge, generating Progress that will add value to the Product in a permanent and progressive way.

The Congress will serve to congregate in Porto numerous specialists of recognized international standing who will address several themes that are both current and pertinent. The general theme of the Congress in "The Construction of Wine – A Conspiracy of Knowledge and Art" and is composed of the following subthemes:

• Construction of a wine
• Constructions for wine
• Construction of the cities of wine
• Construction of wine markets

What is new in this OIV Congress is the creation of a space of reflection and critical discussion by the introduction of specific architectural themes, the identification of the high potential in the relationship between wine trade, urban development and city planning, the relationship between the two Douro river banks at Porto with complementary programs, the organization of the wine industry throughout its itinerary, the new architecture of the wineries and the development of tourism that is associated with wine.

It was with the same strategic vision that, in 1998, the XXIII Vine and Wine World Congress and the OIV General Assembly were held in Lisbon and considered a success. We hope to be able to rise to such a relevant task.
